The heritage of the Church stretches back to Moses, David, Jesus, and the Apostles, and comes down to us today. Those of us who cherish this Christian heritage have an obligation to pass it on to future generations.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"602\" data-end=\"770\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To be a Christian means to be part of the Church. To ignore the Church or to use it only for occasional ceremonies means that we have greatly misunderstood its purpose.<\/span><\/p><h2 data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"805\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ecclesiastical Membership<\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"1147\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fulfillment of our commitment to the Church includes our commitment to live within the canonical standards that the Church has established as normative for the life of every Orthodox Christian. Such standards are not intended as limits upon our freedom, but rather constitute the very basis for the communal life of the Orthodox Church.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1168\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This means that we:<\/span><\/p><ul data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1677\"><li data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1224\"><p data-start=\"1172\" data-end=\"1224\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1302\"><p data-start=\"1227\" data-end=\"1302\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have been confirmed (chrismated) in the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1398\"><p data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1398\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have had our marriage blessed in the Eastern Orthodox Church by a canonical Orthodox priest<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1581\"><p data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"1581\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Participate regularly in the Holy Sacraments of Confession, Holy Communion, and Holy Unction, and attend faithfully the Divine Liturgy as well as the other services of the Church<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1677\"><p data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1677\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Observe the prescribed fast days in a proper manner, as the tradition of the Church teaches<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><h2 data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1704\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Church Membership<\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1835\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Special Regulations and Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America define membership as follows:<\/span><\/p><blockquote data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2376\"><p data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"2376\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAny person, eighteen years of age or older, who was baptized according to the rites of the Church, or who was received into the Church through chrismation, who lives according to the faith and canons of the Church, who has met his or her stewardship obligation (part of which is to meet his or her stewardship financial obligation to the parish), and abides by the regulations herein and the by-laws of the parish \u2014 except that a person under twenty-one shall not serve on the parish council when such service is contrary to local law.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2496\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The responsibilities of membership may be divided into three distinct areas of commitment to Christ and to His Church:<\/span><\/p><ol data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"2591\"><li data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"2535\"><p data-start=\"2501\" data-end=\"2535\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Liturgical (worship) fulfillment<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2564\"><p data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2564\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stewardship fulfillment<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2565\" data-end=\"2591\"><p data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2591\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Canonical fulfillment<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p data-start=\"2593\" data-end=\"2690\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To be a \u201cmember in good standing,\u201d each person must fulfill all three aspects of this commitment.<\/span><\/p><h2 data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"2721\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Liturgical Commitment<\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"2723\" data-end=\"2944\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fulfillment of our liturgical commitment requires regular participation in the services and sacraments of the Church. Without such participation in the Church\u2019s life, one cannot be a Christian in any meaningful sense.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2946\" data-end=\"2963\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As our Lord said:<\/span><\/p><blockquote data-start=\"2965\" data-end=\"3146\"><p data-start=\"2967\" data-end=\"3146\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cUnless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you\u2026 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.\u201d<\/span><br data-start=\"3126\" data-end=\"3129\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2014 John 6:54, 56<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"3148\" data-end=\"3441\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is therefore essential that each person commit to frequent participation in the Holy Eucharist (Communion) and regular participation in the Sacrament of Confession. Questions regarding participation in these sacraments should be referred to Fr. Constantine or to one\u2019s own spiritual father.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3443\" data-end=\"3522\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each person should also participate in other services of the Church, including:<\/span><\/p><ul data-start=\"3524\" data-end=\"3701\"><li data-start=\"3524\" data-end=\"3558\"><p data-start=\"3526\" data-end=\"3558\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturday evening Great Vespers<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3559\" data-end=\"3585\"><p data-start=\"3561\" data-end=\"3585\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sunday morning Orthros<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3586\" data-end=\"3609\"><p data-start=\"3588\" data-end=\"3609\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Feast-day liturgies<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3610\" data-end=\"3651\"><p data-start=\"3612\" data-end=\"3651\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other regular and occasional services<\/span><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3652\" data-end=\"3701\"><p data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3701\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Church\u2019s calendar of fasting and feasting<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><h2 data-start=\"3708\" data-end=\"3722\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stewardship<\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"3724\" data-end=\"3963\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A steward of God is one who realizes that all is God\u2019s and that we are only temporary caretakers of His gifts. Our conscience must guide our financial support of the Church. With the Stewardship Pledge System, we return to God what is His.<\/span><\/p><blockquote data-start=\"3965\" data-end=\"4018\"><p data-start=\"3967\" data-end=\"4018\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe earth is the Lord\u2019s and the fullness thereof.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"4020\" data-end=\"4205\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stewardship means responsible care of Christ\u2019s Church through the offering of our time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of humankind. Stewardship is caring for the needs of others.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"4207\" data-end=\"4509\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To be a member in good standing, each person or family is asked to make an annual financial pledge and fulfill it throughout the year. Many use a percentage-giving method, setting aside a portion of income for the Church. If circumstances change, pledges may be amended by contacting the Church office.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"4511\" data-end=\"4626\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stewardship extends far beyond finances. Each person and family should strive to live the \u201cspirit of the law\u201d with guidance and discernment.<\/span><\/p><h3 data-start=\"6059\" data-end=\"6081\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Categories of Food<\/span><\/h3><p data-start=\"6083\" data-end=\"6192\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"6083\" data-end=\"6122\">Category I \u2014 Meat and Meat Products<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"6122\" data-end=\"6125\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Beef, pork, poultry, gelatin containing animal products, lard, etc.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"6194\" data-end=\"6293\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"6194\" data-end=\"6226\">Category II \u2014 Dairy Products<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"6226\" data-end=\"6229\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Milk, cheese, butter, eggs, whey, and dairy-derived ingredients.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"6295\" data-end=\"6395\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"6295\" data-end=\"6318\">Category III \u2014 Fish<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"6318\" data-end=\"6321\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fish with backbones (tuna, bass, trout, etc.).
